Jeep JL Wrangler Common Faults & Problems

The Jeep Wrangler JL is one of the most popular modern off-road vehicles, loved for its capability, removable doors, and classic rugged design. However, like any vehicle—especially one designed to handle serious off-road stress—it has a number of commonly reported faults and weak points that owners and buyers should be aware of.
Below is a balanced look at the most frequent issues reported by owners and mechanics, especially on high-mileage or heavily modified examples.
1. Steering instability and “death wobble”
One of the most widely discussed issues across Jeep platforms is steering oscillation at highway speeds, often called “death wobble.” While not exclusive to the JL generation, it does appear in some JL models.
This is usually caused by:
Worn or loose track bar bushings
Steering stabilizer wear
Poor alignment after lifts or larger tyres
Imbalanced wheels
It’s not typically a single defect, but rather a sensitivity to wear and modification. However, when it happens, it can feel dramatic and unsettling. 2. Oil cooler and oil filter housing leaks (3.6L Pentastar V6)
Many JL Wranglers use the 3.6L Pentastar engine, and a known weak point is the integrated oil cooler and filter housing assembly.
Common symptoms include:
Oil leaking in the valley of the engine
Coolant contamination
Smell of burning oil after driving
This component is plastic-based in many versions, and heat cycling can eventually cause cracking or seal failure. The 3.6 featured in the JL is a revised engine of the previous model featured in the WK2 Grand Cherokee and the JK Wrangler. This new revised version is featured in the WL Grand Cherokee, The JT Gladiator and the JL Wrangler (Australian market) The oil cooler fault is across all 3.6 engines. 3. Steering box wear and recalls
Some JL models experienced premature steering box wear or looseness, leading to vague steering feel or clunking noises.
In response, manufacturers (under Stellantis) issued updated components and service campaigns in certain markets.
Symptoms include:
Wandering steering on highways
Clicking or knocking during turns
Excessive play in the wheel
4. Electrical gremlins and sensor faults
Modern Wranglers rely heavily on electronics, and JL models are no exception. Owners frequently report intermittent electrical issues such as:
False dashboard warnings
Parking sensor glitches
Battery drain issues
Start/stop system failures (ESS)
These are often traced to battery condition, grounding points, or software calibration issues in the vehicle’s control modules.
5. Uconnect infotainment bugs
The Uconnect system (especially earlier JL software versions) can suffer from:
Random rebooting
Bluetooth dropouts
Frozen touchscreen
Slow startup times
While updates have improved stability over time, older units may still exhibit occasional lag or glitches.
6. Water leaks and sealing issues
Because the JL Wrangler is designed to be removable-top and door-friendly, sealing is always a compromise.
Common leak points include:
Freedom top panels
Door seals after removal/reinstallation
Windshield frame areas during heavy rain or car washes
Small leaks are relatively common, especially after repeated disassembly or off-road flexing.
7. Suspension and bushing wear (especially off-road use)
Hard off-road use or lift kits can accelerate wear in:
Control arm bushings
Ball joints
Sway bar links
The JL is capable off-road, but heavy modification without upgrading supporting components can shorten suspension lifespan significantly.
8. Engine issues: rocker arm and ticking noises
Some Pentastar V6 engines have reported:
Rocker arm roller bearing wear
Engine ticking noises at idle or startup
While not universal, these issues are well documented and usually become more common at higher mileage or with inconsistent oil change intervals.

9. Auto start-stop (ESS) battery strain
The JL’s engine start-stop system can put additional strain on the auxiliary battery system.
Common complaints include:
Frequent battery replacements
System disabling itself unexpectedly
Warning lights related to charging systems
Many owners choose to disable ESS due to convenience and battery longevity concerns.
10. Rust and corrosion (varies by climate)
Although newer JL models are improved compared to earlier generations, corrosion can still appear in:
Door hinges
Frame weld points (in salted-road regions)
Undercarriage components after off-road exposure
Regular underbody cleaning helps significantly.
Additional:
Not applicable to the Australian market as we do not have a JL wrangler with a 4XE option. (we do have this engine option available in the WL Grand Cherokee) is a ongoing issue with the battery and electrical systems in the globally sold JL Wranglers. The 4XE is victim to a long ongoing list of recalls to try and resolve the issues and in some cases vehicles catching on fire.
