JT Gladiator Oil Leak: It's Not The Rear Main.

The Jeep Gladiator with the 3.6L petrol V6 shares a well-known weakness seen across several Jeep models in this engine family: the oil cooler assembly and its associated gasket can fail over time. This is very similar in nature to the issue found in the Grand Cherokee and Wrangler variants.
There are two common failure modes with this system.
The first is an internal failure of the oil cooler itself. When this happens, engine oil can mix into the cooling system. This contaminates the coolant, reduces cooling efficiency, and can ultimately lead to overheating. Once overheating occurs, it can place stress on hoses, radiator components, and other parts of the cooling circuit, potentially leading to secondary leaks and further damage.
The second—and far more frequently seen—issue is failure of the oil cooler gasket between the intake manifold and the cooler housing. When this gasket deteriorates, the engine can rapidly lose both oil and coolant. These fluids tend to collect in the valley of the V before spilling down and often appearing over the top of the transmission. If not addressed quickly, this can lead to low oil pressure, overheating, and serious engine damage.
It is a common misdiagnosis on these vehicles for a technician or owner to condemn a rear main oil seal for this leak. it is highly unlikely to be the rea main oil seal and more likely to be the oil cooler in the valley.
To carry out the repair, the intake manifold must be removed. It is strongly recommended that the manifold gaskets are replaced at the same time to avoid repeat labour in the near future.
While it is possible to replace just the gasket, the more reliable long-term repair is to replace the entire oil cooler assembly. Given the known internal failure rate of the cooler, replacing only the gasket can sometimes result in repeat failure later—meaning the labour has to be paid for twice. In most cases, doing the full assembly at once is the more cost-effective approach over time.
From a parts perspective, the Gladiator’s components are generally more affordable than some larger Jeep models, and an experienced technician can typically complete the job in around six hours depending on condition and access.
