WK2 Grand Cherokee Transmission or AC Leak

If you’ve got a WK2 Grand Cherokee and you’re noticing leaks or air conditioning issues, this is something you need to know.

At GDL Automotive, we regularly see failures in the combined air conditioning condenser and transmission cooler unit, and it can cause more problems than most people expect.

How the System Works

On the WK2, the A/C condenser and transmission cooler are built into one unit. This means a failure on either side can affect multiple systems in the vehicle.

The Most Common Issue

The most frequent problem is a leaking condenser.

This usually shows up as:

  • Green fluid under the car

  • Loss of air conditioning performance

A lot of people assume it’s coolant, but from factory these run red coolant. So if you’re seeing green fluid, it’s a strong sign of an A/C refrigerant leak, not a cooling system issue.

The More Serious Failure

If the transmission cooler side fails, it becomes a bigger problem.

This can result in:

  • Rapid loss of transmission fluid

  • Potential transmission damage if not caught early

We’ve seen cases where the system has dumped fluid quickly, putting the vehicle at serious risk.

Why It Gets Expensive

Because it’s a combined unit, a failure on one side affects the whole assembly.

If the transmission cooler fails:

  • The entire unit needs replacing

  • You will also need an A/C regas once it is repaired

The Bottom Line

If you notice:

  • Fluid under the car

  • A/C not performing properly

  • Any signs of transmission fluid loss

Do not ignore it. This issue can escalate quickly and become far more expensive if left too long.

At GDL Automotive, we keep these units in stock and can get it sorted before it turns into a major repair.
